  • Having read the article entirely, the answer is kinda. This particular patient had a lot of complications as a result of their diabetes, so they had to use a bunch of extra medications to prevent complications. No clue how expensive those were, but thats not a cost inherant to the process. If you were “fixed” as soon as your diabetes becomes apparant, that wouldnt be neccassary.

They also did a bunch of animal testing after having gone through the process of creating the cells. Strictly speaking, not meccassary for the future. It was neccassary here as it is a novel approach, and it will continue being neccassary until this is a regularly permormed operation. Once the process is widely regarded to be safe, and weve dialed in the exact process to controlling the production, that sortve testing should become obselete.

Finally, the transplant is absurdly cheap. Basically free.

All together, the reasearch is absurdly more expensive than the process. For most of the world, this should be a very effective, cheap, relatively fast, and noninvasive. This is huge news! Of course in the US you cant afford it.

  • I know youre making a referance, but im making this comment for others that might not have the context of this artist.

No one in this meme is being a dick, theyre not actually upset about the photo. People send this artist photos with the intention that he will do some goofy shit that is generally not what you would think of when you think of “fixing” the photo.

  • Yeah, i shouldve better clarified that I was speaking from my personal suspicions, not from a place of fact. As for the inclusion of the top context, i dont think it wouldve changed anything for me. My assumption that the comic is intended to cause harm is based on my assumption of the comics age, and my knowledge of how women were genrally seen as property back then. If it were a modern comic, I would be campaigning for the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise. But given the history and the likelihood that the author will not be offended since theyre dead, im not particularly incentivised to find nuance from an era of blatant disgusting behavior.

I appreciate the info on flappers. I don’t know anything about them but a couple people were telling me more. With that context, that flappers wasnt a slur or demeaning, i could much more easily see the comic going either way.

  • That was very educational! But no matter how many facts you hit me with i dont think i will ever be comfortable on a twin jet. It does raise a good questions though, they mentioned quad jets are gas guzzlers due to the four engines, but couldnt they just use two? I dont see why all four engines have to be in use, i just want them to be there in case of failure. And yeah, i see the issue that now youre paying extra two carry around a bunch of weight that should hopefully never be utilized, but I would imagine an extra layer of redundancy might offset the cost of the extra weight by not making you buy a new plane when your first two engines reach the end of their life.

Basically, an extra engine wouldve saved this plane. Over the course of this planes life, would the fuel cost of that extra unused weight be more than the value of the plane, cargo on the plane, and the loss of life associated?

Or maybe there is a technical reason you cant have two unused jets? Are they impossible to cold start in air?

  • True, but its not far off. I ran the math on minimum wage, the machine costs $2000 a month for maintance, whereas full time at minimum wage is 1200 a month. If the employee makes more than $12/h the machine would cost less for maintance. That is ignoring the upfront cost of $20,000-$30,000, but the nature of fast food with its low employee retention and high burnout rate means the upfront costs would likely be worthwhile for companies like mcdonalds. Not having to go through the hiring process would save a fair bit of money id imagine, though i have no clue how much.

Its also worth noting that these machines are way more expensive than they need to be, because they are kept artificially high because the payoff for buying one is so large. Companies REALLY want automation, and theyre willing to pay top dollar to get it because it means they dont need slaves anymore. Same with the maintance, there is about a zero percent chance it legitimately costs the maintance company anywhere in the astronomical ballpark of $2000 a month to maintain the machines.

  • That is super fair, did not think about that. I suppose my issue with punji sticks is that theyre not neccassarily designed to kill, thats why they were often coated in feces. The intent was infection afaik because that disabled the soldier and those who had to help him. But yes, I view bouncing betties in the exact same light. Maybe not illegal, but i cannot understand why, since other weapons thats sole goal is to cause nonlethal permanent damage are banned, such as laser weapons. And yeah, I agree, even starting off this thread i dont think anyone has even attempted to claim the US were the good guys.

  • Oh wow, it does appear that more democrats recieve foodstamps than republicans. I appreciate that bit of info. As for the rest of your comment, im not sure how to even go about breaking down that.

If republicans dont want to get blamed for being pieces of shit, they shouldnt be pieces of shit, simple as.

Had to go back and reread my own comment, ive been posting a lot tonight. And more of those posts were shitting on democrats than republicans. Reason being simple, republicans are shit but democrats are SUPPOSED to be good. Shitting on republicans is easy, but it feels like bullying a disabled kid because everyone including the republicans know that they are a joke. So I’d much rather punch up at the people who claim to trying to help while ensuring the ratchet effect remains in full swing.

So what in the hell are you even trying to argue against? The only point i made is that you cant rely on republicans to do anything good, even by accident. If youre arguing for the republicans then thats really fucking gross, especially for someone projecting “bootlicker” onto people.

  • I dont remember exactly what we did, but i remember we had a situation where one of my fellow players was a centaur. The dm ruled that if you were to use a battering ram while riding said centaur, both your strengths get added together for the check. The person riding the centaur has something that enabled them to more effectively use tools they were holding, i think it was if they used a handheld tool they got advantage with it. And then we had one more player who was a turtle person. As long as they were in their shell they got a ton of defense buffs. So, we had player 2 hold player 3 while they both climbed onto player 1. We then proceeded to use player 3 as a battering ram against a magical door that we couldnt figure out how to open. After rolls went through, we ended uo blowing the door down so violently that is killed most of the spawn in the next room
