0·21 days agoI agree it does matter to a degree, like if you wound up on Hexbear you would be blocked from accessing some things. That said… if people were recommending users just joined some of the larger instances like world/ml and then spread out they would figure it out for themselves. Personally I started on .ml, made an account on .ca/.world, then found dbzer0. I also have a Hexbear account I haven’t logged into in months, because I thought it would be interesting to learn what that whole culture was about.
At the end of the day I stay on dbzer0 and world… but that’s years of use that narrowed me down to that.

0·21 days agoI don’t go on reddit anymore but during the 3rd party app shift a lot of people complained about not knowing exactly where to sign up because they didnt understand piefed.social, would be able to see and respond to the same content as lemmy.world. Then people would scare them because they would say things like well this instance is all blank. ML is only Marxist Leninists and whatever else. Yet if users just signed up on .ml, .world, . whereever, they would have learned everything they wanted to in a short amount of time and subs would be more active with users so the whole “well they don’t have niche things” complaint would have fizzled out rather quickly. And likely would have got a steady stream of users over time.
That’s not what everyone wants granted, but in my experience setting up an account, using it and then finding an instance or 2 to settle in was simple. (Then you flip between them in your chosen app, which would have more funding and support do to more user base)

0·2 months agoWonder if they are thin clients. I remember setting up some Dell thin and zero clients using Windows for a state college in Florida a few years back. 2019 I think. Everything being forced into OneDrive storage for their personal files, but it made it so they could sit down at any desk, and pull the computer up out of the desk and login and have their crap while it all being very locked down/managed.

I always forget how small some of these countries are population wise.
Hungary has the population of New Jersey, (9.5 million.)
