Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL children in Australia leave out beer for Santa.English
16·2 days agoI think this is pretty common across the UK (presumably ROI as well).
My daughter has been informed that Santa loves Port with his mince pie!
This is the zombie deer disease, right? Honestly, why would you even risk it…
For the uninitiated, here’s a good podcast series by the BBC about mad cow disease and zombie deer:

18·3 days agoLBC is a talk radio station/company, but they also do more serious journalism and podcasts. They platform a broad range of views, but tend to give the prime time slots to hosts on the right.
Reasonably credible.

Science Memes@mander.xyz•Statistically, probably with the beetles. 🪲English
3·8 days agoI’ve never seen cactus fruit like that before, initially I thought it was a joke image and someone had taken a cactus and put a blueberry on each needle or something. Wild.
Oscar Wilde indeed!

Science@mander.xyz•The entire body of a sea urchin is what researchers are now calling an “all-body brain,” with neurons that function as a brain throughout its anatomy.English
51·23 days agoI, for one, would like to see the cafeteria menus in advance so parents can adjust their dinner menus accordingly. I don’t like the idea of my children having two all-body brain meals in one day.

4·1 month agoI think you’re missing something here; in the UK we also talk about pre-tax income.
It’s important in lots of ways, for example you choose how much to pay into your pension, and you get tax relief on that.
If you just talk about post-tax income you would miss the enormous difference between someone who is on £54,350 and pays the minimum 8% into a pension (£50k taxable) and someone on £62,500 who pays 20% into a pension (£50k taxable). The second person is a lot better off overall, because they have saved £12,500 in their pension and the first person has saved £4,350, which compounds pretty quickly.

World News@lemmy.world•Virginia Giuffre, Prince Andrew and Jeffrey Epstein accuser, dies by suicideEnglish
0·8 months agoYes it is a product of those things, if you’re thinking about it then please see someone and work out a path to better mental health.
We only get one life, it would be a tragedy to waste it!

World News@lemmy.world•Virginia Giuffre, Prince Andrew and Jeffrey Epstein accuser, dies by suicideEnglish
0·8 months agoTwo people close to me have gone from “normal” to suicidal and back again in the last 6 years, for different reasons and at different times. Thankfully they are both stable and enjoying their lives now.
If you’ve not witnessed anything like that, count yourself lucky. I remember talking to people about suicide when I was younger and couldn’t understand how anyone could get to that place until I saw someone I know really well go through a complete mental breakdown.
I’m also mostly interested in slightly older games like Rome Remastered, I probably won’t be playing many brand new titles.
Might try and get Age of Mythology working as well as I have so much nostalgia for it!
What kind of games are you into?

Yeah that’s fair, the west is only one part of the world though. Plenty of mad stuff happening elsewhere!
