Never heard that idiom before, in my language we say “I’m hungry like a wolf”. Horse eating wasn’t totally uncommon either though.

I thought the point of the idiom is horses being large and you are so hungry you could eat a (whole) horse
I feel like that can’t be the whole story because then you could just say cow, which are even bigger
I guess. Horse meat is not eaten as often. It’s good though
