This will gain notoriety when Valve starts distributing Android apps on Steam. I imagine the following process:

• People buy a Steam Machine, after a gaming session they want to watch Netflix and they can’t.
• Valve responds with Android apps for streaming services.
• The FOSS community reacts and builds an alternative.

With a $500 pricing it would be sold out eternally. It would be a revolution.

+$700 = Niche product

+800 = DOA

The Deck while also underpowered sold well for a reason.

This. Corporate public traded company CEOs criticizing Valve as a monopoly when they alone made PC gaming the best platform ever to play games is freaking ridiculous. If you have an old PC or laptop you can use to start getting cozy with Linux, you can flash a USB drive with Aurora if you want a preview of what Desktop mode is like on Steam OS or Bazzite.

Yes.

We are the niche of a niche. We need more content, as long as it’s relevant.

Cost aside. If they don’t price it competitively between the Xbox and the PS5, the Steam Machine will be DOA.

The Deck is a perfect example of what they should try to replicate. If they don’t do that, it will flop.

I’ll be getting one and 4 controllers because my kids love the Steam Deck and I have a family library full of games.

But at that price point it won’t be able to appeal to people looking for a console. It will only appeal to the tiny segment of PC gamers that already have a Steam game library and want the native living room experience because streaming sucks.

The majority of PC gamers don’t care about couch gaming, this is why most PC ports don’t have splitscreen.

I love local coop and Linux, so for them to thrive, I hope Valve makes the right call, again.
