IANAL, but my understanding is this is how laws are challenged in the US. A plaintiff cannot file suit against the legislature, or the government in general, to challenge a law. A plaintiff needs to sue an individual within the government who has enforced the law, and then demonstrate that the enforcement of said law has caused the plaintiff harm. In this case the law will be enforced by Newsome or someone within his administration like the Secretary of State.

I learned this when Texas passed their anti-abortion law in 2021 (S.B. 8). Rather than having government officials enforce that law, the state offloaded enforcement to private citizens by paying them cash rewards for successfully suing alleged abortion providers. Since state officials are not doing the enforcing they are not directly causing harm to any potential plaintiffs. There’s nobody in the state government you can sue to initiate a challenge to the law.

I always assumed the translators were simply doing a heroic job. Getting puns and wordplay to work across languages is hard. I would not be surprised if some jokes had to be significantly changed for different languages or countries.

That’s actually a big improvement. Still an ugly vehicle, but at least this version has better character.

I wonder what the alternate timeline is like where Ho Chi Minh’s letters to President Truman were properly delivered. The US could have sided with Vietnam, and the second half of the 20th century would have looked so, so different.

Stats are valid when they are used in the proper context and are not being misrepresented. For example, Black and Native American people account for a disproportionate number of drowning deaths in the US. But it would be irresponsible to simply conclude that those groups are inherently bad swimmers. Just like the way the 13/50 trope is irresponsibly used to imply non-whites are inherently more prone to criminal behavior.

All that aside, this meme isn’t attacking men. It’s attacking sexist tropes used against women.

Quoting crime statistics based on race, like the old “13/50” trope, is often used to enforce racist notions that minority groups are inherently bad people. It’s punching down at marginalized people.

This meme, at least as I see it, is the opposite. It’s satirizing the usual crap from the anti-feminist crowd claiming that women are inherently inferior. It’s punching up at sexist men.

Know when the museums have free or discounted events for the locals.

Know that the library probably has free passes to the museums, too!

And if you’re in a city with a decent sized college, there are lots of cheap or free interesting things to do related to it: public lectures, music performances, theater, sports…

The choice of regions feels cherry-picked to inflate the blue area on the map. Why else would they include Mongolia, or include only the least-dense regions of the US and Russia while excluding the major population centers?

While South Africa certainly has a lot of murders, both absolute and per capita, this map could easily be draw with a lot less blue on it.
