At that point though, I may as well be plugging it into my computer to update, and it’s just inconvenient. The majority of my storage is taken up by music and podcasts, and photos. I don’t plan what I’m going to listen to, or which photos I’ll use, so I can’t organise them in advance, other than making playlists, so the bulk of it would need to be on the phone anyway.

After reading the replies, and the suggestions from @limerod@reddthat.com and @Shimitar@downonthestreet.eu, and a load of research, I’ve narrowed the choice down to three phones
The Samsung Galaxy A55, The Nothing Phone 3a Lite, and the Motorola Moto G86

They’re all a pretty similar spec and price, but I think the G86 is just edging it out for me. I’m going to sleep on it tonight and have a look again tomorrow evening once my head clears a bit :)

Believe it or not, I hadn’t actually considered that. I’ve switched to Linux, and FOSS for a lot of other things, but completely forgot about my adblocker. In fairness to them though, I set it up a few years ago, and haven’t had a problem with it, other than when Sky, a British ISP, seemed to restrict traffic to it.

I use AdGuard at the moment, and one of the Android Debloater scripts, so there’s no reason I couldn’t use them on a new phone :)
They could work, depending on where I am, but as Noodles pointed out, it makes things a lot more inconvenient a lot of the time :(

I’m currently using a bit over 300GB for things like music and photos, as I tend to be in places with bad internet coverage. Including apps on the phone storage I’m over 350GB, and that’s with regular cleaning, and moving files between the phone and PC. It’s annoying, but I’m stuck with it for the time being at least :(

It is very tempting. The only thing putting me off is that it’s a Samsung, and they seem to be getting worse with regards to advertising and privacy. It’s definitely in the running though :)

Sorry, I’ve just edited my post after a similar reply. A Pixel with GrapheneOS would be ideal, if it had an SD card slot, but the lack of one is a deal breaker. I’m regularly in places with no internet connection, so keep my media on one :(

Sorry, I meant to put it in the body. They don’t have SD card support, and that’s a must have for me. I regularly go to places with no internet, or a very poor signal, so I keep a lot of media on the card.

I’d do something quite similar, under the same assumptions, but would split the money four ways with my wife, kid, and house stuff. We’d all get decent laptops and computers and upgrade the server and backups. I need a new phone, so that would be sorted.
Selfishly, I’d get a new to me motorbike and get the current one serviced properly. Neither would cost too much, but they’re things that are not currently important enough to spend on.
I’d pay a cleaning company for a few days of cleaning and sorting, as we all have either ADHD or something close, and haven’t been able to get our shit together for long enough to make a difference 🫣
I’d like to get the garage insulated, as it’s part of the house and can be cold, and get the garden tidied enough that we can keep it under control.
I’ve probably overspent, but if not, I’d take the family and some close friends out for a nice meal. We haven’t all been together for a while, and there’s a really nice but reasonably priced restaurant nearby 🙂

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) was apparently doing this a few years ago. They would book people in for appointments in an upstairs room and put out of order signs on the lifts. Anyone who made it to the room was automatically denied their benefits.
I say apparently because I didn’t personally know anyone who went through that one. The office that I had to visit had a car park, but no spaces near the door. I was dropped off by the door while my wife parked the car, but another person drove themselves and walked from the car. Their claim was denied, based on the distance they walked.
I like the idea of containerised apps, especially if you can have multiples of the same app.
A few years ago, when I was pretty much fully on Windows, I used PortableApps to manage a few websites and their emails, and having a simple way to do the same thing is one of the few reasons I’m still stuck with Windows.
On top of that, I like trying out new apps and programs, but uninstalling them doesn’t always get rid of the extras, like new dependencies.
I mostly agree, but some small communities, many years ago, would go by oldest, continuing from where you left off last time. That was fantastic for the sort of place where you wanted to read everything for whatever reason. If that could be put in on a community basis, it would be great :)
