Diocletian was a Roman Emperor of the late 3rd century and early 4th century AD who royally fucked the government he took over for some twenty years, and then promptly retired to a nice villa in the Balkans.

After reading his wiki, I feel like this characterization is a bit unfair. His rule was by most accounts successful, bringing the Empire back from the brink of collapse. He fucked the government essentially by abdicating, rather than being a shit emperor, which is why they wanted him back. It seems the Christians took over during Constantine’s subsequent reign and gave him a bad rap.

Wiki said he’d gotten sick before he abdicated, and reading between the lines it seems pretty certain he also got sick of everybody’s shit. Honestly, being emperor is hazardous to your health; I’d say he made a pretty smart move. The “nice villa” thing makes it sound like he lived in a hovel on a farm or something, but dude lived the rest of his life in a giant city-sized fort he had built for just that purpose. He was no slouch.

Yeah, was gonna say - this guy is another one of the “always, in every context, thinking about gay sex” closeted Republicans. Religion does this to them, the systematic and merciless repression of sexuality causes it to become an immense burden.

Well. Robin Williams, a (hilarious) American comedian and actor, gained much of his early fame/notoriety on a TV show called Mork and Mindy circa 1978 in which Robin played an alien named Mork.

The show was actually a spinoff of Happy Days, where the “Mork” character first appeared.

“Bjork and Bindi” is clearly a play on words that leverages this.

Surely you knew one or more guys who were overly excitable/dramatic or one or more girls who were like… the opposite of feminine? I knew them, I can think back now and see in my head the faces of the ones I would suspect, lol. I recently had one of them reach out to me through Facebook (I’m not on Facebook but my SO is) and sure enough, she has a wife now and I just thought “yep, that tracks.”

Can someone explain to me why Rust enthusiasts are so evangelical about it? I get that it’s memory safe, OK - super great. But rewriting a stable, small-but-important legacy tool doesn’t seem like a good place to prove its worth. Surely there are a million better places? And yet when I heard about this, it totally seemed to track. I’ve never touched Rust but I already find its proponents to be strangely focused on it. I never felt such religious zeal with regard to a programming language.

The most common response on social media to the democracy crisis in the USA seems to default to a need for extreme violence.

I know there are actual people like this, but I do think it’s mostly foreign bots beating the war drums. It happens here too, though far less than on Reddit.
