Cloudflare is in an interesting space. They are a service provider (ddos protection, scalable edge caching, SSL termination, etc) that allows the highly centralized internet to function. However they aren’t a gatekeeper at all. You only need cloudflare if you are in the top 5% of internet websites by volume. So when cloudflare has a problem, Lemmy isn’t affected, but Reddit is. My blog isn’t affected, but someone like https://blog.ipspace.net/ is affected.

My personal browsing habbits meant I didn’t even realize there was a cloudflare problem until I read an article about it on Lemmy. Anyway, just a tangent, but as a network engineer I’m sure i’ll be interested in the RCA.

Force the university to pay 10x the mean salary. That way the university is disincentivized to abuse the program. If he is truly the foremost expert in whatever field, then his salary should be a drop in the bucket compared to the grants he will need to actually do his research and it shouldn’t be a big deal.

You are basically listing out a huge number of issues with your hiring process, and then you are saying that the only remedy is outsourcing. What is so magic about h1bs that they understand “basic terms like SOLID or KISS,” bu all the post-filter applicants you get don’t?

I would support an h1b program if the base wage had to be 10x the normal wage for the position they were hired. If you are truly an exemplary unicorn worker that can’t possibly be found in the rest of the US, then why not mandate a healthy and definitely non-exploitive wage for them?

The best part about these kinds of “findings” is that in the cold war, the Department of Defense and the various Pentagon think tanks already knew about this risk, and even established a “strategic mineral reserve” that was at one point worth ~$70billion in 1960 ~$700billion today. But of course Capitalists can’t ever plan for the future. So it was sold off for pennies on the dollar to various private industries and politically well-connected firms over the years which I think culminated under Clinton.
Included in those mineral reserves was helium, which just recently was fully privatized.

What Mamdani can do, and I hope will do, is improve material conditions for enough new yorkers, that various city-council members will be replaced with workers that can actually start defunding the NYPD and reforming what policing is in NYC.
