Definitely. It’s very brave and very necessary. Even if they never fire a shot, they were and very much still are the primary targets of the bigoted fascists. I really hope to see the rest of the community around them join and embrace them. This is what it takes to scare off bullies. Not asking nicely. Part of me feels like. “So we send out the black man to sacrifice their peace and safety for my white peace”.
But at the same time. I don’t own a gun. I’m kind of anti gun. I am not intimidating. I don’t know how to go about actually doing anything. And they seem to have ideas and organization.
Out patrolling. Hanging around places where immigrants are, with their rifles.
Just being present in groups. Talking to people, making sure people know they are there to protect them.
I just can’t see myself being taken seriously in doing any of that. I can’t see myself getting a group of people together to do that.
And i don’t feel comfortable carrying around a gun either.
I do however feel comfortable carrying a taser and pepper spray. I only have the latter.
I think like so many, we just don’t know what to do about any of this.
I can vote properly. I can show up to protest. I can keep up the conversations. Engage with people when I can. Stay informed.
What else can I even do but wait around. ?!?!?
Nobody’s sending them. They’re making a choice to defend themselves and others. If you feel that way, then do what you can to help them. Thank them if you see them. They’re the only ones who seem organized at all, so why not ask if you can help out in a support function somehow?
A phrase from my time spent in rehab comes to mind, “Get comfortable being uncomfortable.” Change won’t happen without discomfort.

They were often used as human shields in war time. Put in the first line of defense. Or sent in first to battle.
And here history is repeating; having them take the biggest risks.

At least this time the black Americans volunteered. And that does count for something. And they have internal leadership, which is also a good thing.

I’m glad the panthers are organizing. I’m reassured by their presence. I’ll support them in whatever way I can.
As a trans man, I’m so grateful for people standing up where I can’t. I’m not Black, so there is a small amount of guilt there, but intersectionality matters. The ruling class won’t stop until we’re all marginalized.
Not everyone needs to carry. Unless of course its open war. Just the prospect of possible armed response is enough to make bullies think twice. The best everyone who can’t or won’t carry at protest can do is show support for those that do. Let them know. And if interviewed let the journalist know the crowd is happy to have them there. Do everything in your power to not let the media other them, or turn them into a boogieman. It’s what they always do.
A lot of black people have long been prepared for this. So many white people feel like things are all a suddenly falling apart. Never realizing things were never as they thought they were. The veil hasn’t slipped like this since kent state. And we’d do ourselves a disservice to let them casually pull it back up again.
