My personal favorite is
a competent king is crowned
he strengthens the country
the people revere his name
the aristocracy hate him and roll back all his reforms once he’s dead
the country becomes irrelevant for several decades
Aristocrats really can’t help it. They HAVE to pick up the villain ball and be so cartoonishly evil and do so much mustache-twirling, GTA main antagonist-like villainy that they end up shooting themselves in the foot, reducing their wealth significantly because of the country becoming irrelevant, or just straight up dying, either from their family members, other aristocrats, or the public at large.
We should be thankful evil people are extremely fucking stupid. Like, we all thought All For One from My Hero Academia was just an overexaggeration of the attitude of the regular anime villain, but no, extremely rich people are just like that IRL.
Unfortunately most good people are stupid too
I don’t think most good people will go out of their way to do stuff that is actively detrimental to their goals for the sake of self-satisfaction 90% of the time.
We should be thankful evil people are extremely fucking stupid.
It’s a requirement.
I guess not much has changed since then. Only that crowning is electing and aristocracy is rich people.
The Grand Duchy of Lithuania had several good leaders in a row.
The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth had a stream of absolute, selfish idiots, nobility included, for most of the time it existed. Reading it’s history is an exercise in frustration.
Reminds me of the fall of the Roman Empire
Sounds a bit like the US nowadays
