This is the door lock where we are staying and I am irritated every time I have to punch in the code.

The letters are following the same pattern as the numbers - Top to bottom, left to right. ‘C’ is likely a Clear button in case you mess up your code. XYZ was chosen instead of ABC since C already has a use.
