George Delmas is one big subject that is sadly overlook in French history

He enlisted in the fire brigade at a young age and then quickly enlisted in the French army in 1914 where he was quickly promoted to captain in 1917.

He ended Ww1 with 9 wounds, 3 promotion, a croix de guerre with 8 palms and several citation from many generals such as Joffre:

Officer of remarkable bravery, wounded four times, returned to the front barely healed, distinguished himself on July 4, 1916 by vigorously leading his company in the attack on enemy positions. On July 5, contributed to the capture of a trench and a strongly defended village. The following night, repelled an enemy counter-attack.

In 1940 he re-enlisted in the French army after serving inside the fire brigade of his hometown and serving as a gendarme. He was wounded two times during the battle of France and offered to resign once he had to serve under the Vichy regime.

He then became a close member of the local French resistance, where he regrouped 60 men to form a small Maquis near Cahors who would constantly harass the enemy and conduct several acts of sabotage until the appeal for a general assault after the 6th of June.

On one occasion an SS convoy was severely damaged during an ambush; afterward an entire convoy was annihilated by his men when, during the engagement, one of Delmas’s men, galvanized by the recent victories, sang La Marseillaise while shooting with his machine gun.

Delmas was finally given retirement after wishing to serve in Indochina

Brilliant officer already holder of eleven commendations from the 14-18 war, distinguished himself once again in the Maquis during an unequal battle with numerically superior enemy forces on the night of June 30 to July 1, 1944.

I’m not one to be patriotic, but if that means killing Nazis while singing my country’s national anthem, then I would GLADLY do so.
