i thought it was more about making the older models shittier with updates. like apple limiting battery capacity, samsung slowing down and removing features, etc. i had s22u and it had tons of customization, you could put a calendar or a gif in the AOD but suddenly they removed it all, you could only change the color of the clock.

It’s new devices coming onto the market. So if they existed before June but they are still being sold, the rules do not apply to them. But new models that are coming out now have to have software support.

Apple supports their phones for at least 5 years. iPhone XS from 2018 is still supported by the current version of iOS. As iOS 26 just came out, that means 8 years of software support.

Its literally a feature to improve the longevity of the device. And if you really hate it you can either replace the degraded battery (in which case it will automatically return to the factory clock speed) or disable the feature and experience device instability. Would you rather your phone randomly crash and shut off on you or would you prefer to keep 50Mhz of clock speed?
The link literally describes them slowing the phones down to maintain reasonable battery life. That’s a perfectly acceptable tradeoff

They’re referring to an old controversy that was a mixture of bad decisions and conspiracy. They’ve now linked an article to the outcome of it. I won’t cover the whole thing but Apple “let slip” and “admitted” to slowing down old phones. This obviously feeds into the planned obsolescence conspiracies but at the time it wasn’t exactly hidden, Apple (one of their higher ups though I can’t think of who) said they were doing it.
The real issue was that it wasn’t implemented without transparency. The point is the device underclocks to prevent unexpected shut downs which makes it slower as a trade off for stability. Devices still do this, but it’s now shown in the settings and warns that the battery needs replacing.

Yeah but they make their devices terribly slow. I had a 8 y/o Oneplus 5 with Lineage OS 22.2 which was running as fast as my iPhone 13 pro with iOS 26 — which wasn’t the case 3 years back when I bought the iPhone. Unfortunately the motherboard of OP5 is dead because of wear & tear due to everyday use and is not worth the repair cost. So yeah, even my Oneplus 5 got 8 years of software updates (although not officially) and may get some more if the LineageOS team would still maintain it.

This is literally a GOOD THING. They made it so their phones would reduce their boost clocks slightly if the battery is degraded to the point where the battery can no longer support those clocks in order to prevent unexpected power offs/faults from the processor trying to pull more energy than the battery can output. The underclock is not noticeable in day to day usage and prevents instability due to a worn out battery AND it automatically reverts to the factory clock speed if the battery is replaced and therefore the underclock is no longer needed!
Would you rather your several year old phone be slightly imperceptibly slower at times or crash randomly because that 50Mhz of boost clock was so critical to you?

iPhones have a setting where as the battery ages they can throttle the cpu, you can disable this setting.
It did it briefly against users will on batteries that were at a certain age / wear threshold, then Apple started offering decreased battery replacement costs and added a toggle for this feature that the user could control. It’s been there since iOS 11 back in 2018.
