    Explanation: During the Cold War, much of France’s nuclear arsenal was prepared… for a strike on West Germany. Under the not-unreasonable assumption that the Soviets would have to pass through West Germany to get to France, France decided that the total nuclear obliteration of West Germany was a sacrifice that they, generously, were willing to make in order to assure the destruction of any invading Soviet forces.
