I think when someone talks about the struggle to obtain healthcare or other basic rights, they should confirm they’re in America.
I’m French and I can still relate to this meme immensely. Even with basically free healthcare, depression makes it so asking for medical help (and doing everything they need you to do to be able to help you) requires a ridiculous amount of energy and motivation.
Can’t imagine if I had to pay thousands of dollars on top of that :(
Sweden here, also relatable. I’m very happy to have the support systems I do, but I’m still flirting with poverty and struggling with an underfunded healthcare system.
“You think you have ADHD? Jump through an unreasonable gauntlet of administrative hoops to receive care.” They think everyone’s just lying to get drugs.
“You have depression? Here are some generic treatments. Please try harder to be normal.”
They want to exterminate “abnormal” and “weak” people, simple as that. Why else could someone possibly create so many hoops to jump through just to get basic care to be well? It’s because the nazis are in-charge.
This is also worse if you’re an English speaker in a non-US country. I’ve been trying to help my friend, an expat in Germany, find a specialist for his condition, and finding anyone in his area who doesn’t hang up the phone at the question “do you have English language services” is incredibly frustrating.
Does Germany have any sort of patient translation services? I think that’s available here for many languages, but you may have to qualify for it, not really sure how it works.
Even in some parts of Europe it’s hard to come by specialist doctors. I once needed a appointment with a orthopedist and every one that I called had a free spot in 1.5 months. My dude, my knee pain will probably go away on it’s own in 1.5 months.
Tell me about it. I have a chronic illness and I had to cut back to working part time when first getting diagnosed and starting treatment.
I wish it only took the energy and time of a part-time job - where I am it’s essentially a full-time thing.
Trying to change primary care doctor. Love mine, but she’s too far away and a major medical group is now giving her marching orders. She can no longer treat me as she sees fit.
FINALLY got a couple of offices on the line to inquire, a month out for a simple visit. And despite my insurer (Obamacare, which I’ll be losing January 1st, thanks Republicans) giving me the doctor’s info, I still had to do the song and dance and confirm they would cover me. Even then they seemed a little unsure.
Ran out of my restless legs drugs, haven’t slept for shit in 4-days. None of the online docs will refill, local walk-in clinics either don’t take my insurance or have already wrote my one prescription for the year. This is for a simple drug, non-narcotic, non-lethal, that I’ve been on for 15-years. They act like they’re doing me a favor cutting a prescription. “Well, just this once!”
Meanwhile, my Filipino wife, “I do not understand. In the Philippines there are doctors everywhere, you can go anytime and the cost is $10.” Welcome to “First World” America baby.
Thanks for the reminder to apply for disability upgrade. I’ve been putting it off for a few weeks because it’s such a pain, but I really need to do it.
