    Look up the works of sociologist Alvin Toffler.

    Back around 1970 he wrote “Future Shock.”

    His premise was that the coming Digital Era would be a massive change from the Industrial Era. Many people couldn’t/wouldn’t want to adapt themselves to the new reality. They’d find themselves working harder and harder to maintain the illusion that society was still the same.
